The Greater Manchester Mayoralty is elected by voters across Greater Manchester and serves a four-year term. The Mayor of Greater Manchester has responsibility for issues that affect all ten Greater Manchester boroughs, including Wigan.
The Mayor controls the Bee Network bus system, the regional transport budget, integrated ticketing and fares, cycling and walking infrastructure, and has some influence over rail services.
The Mayor also acts as Greater Manchester’s Police and Crime Commissioner and oversees Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, setting priorities and budgets for both services.
The role includes responsibility for regional housing investment, regeneration projects, brownfield development, strategic planning across Greater Manchester, adult skills funding, economic development and business growth.
The Mayor does not control the NHS, welfare benefits, immigration, national taxation, defence, employment law, or most areas of education. The Mayor cannot pass laws, overrule Wigan Council, set income tax, or directly run schools. These powers remain with Parliament and the UK Government.
